Reinforced Soil Rockfall Protection Embankments (RS-RPEs) have proven to be a safe measure for the protection of people, structures and infrastructure against rockfall or impact events. RS-RPEs can be designed also as crash attenuation embankments to protect assets close to railway or motorway networks. Designed to absorb very high impact energy (up to 30,000 kJ).

RS-RPEs can be constructed in different shapes and sizes, with different reinforcements (geogrids, geotextiles, geostrips, steel wire mesh, etc.) and facing materials (wrap-around, geocells, gabions, etc.). Such must be designed to absorb the impact generated by the mass, shape, size and speed of the impacting object, which could be a rock or even a vehicle.

The design method for RS-RPE, must include the effect of all the variables involved in the resistance to penetration on the upslope face and the resistance to extrusion on the downslope face. Curious to know more about it? Please get in touch.
